Portfolios (Polystyrene/Photographic/Mixed Media)
Polystyrene
Polystyrene packaging is a lowly servant - almost a nothing -existing to ensure other things don’t get broken in transit. It is also despised: as a non-recyclable material, an ecological problem, and a waste of space. My work points towards the beauty I see in the form and texture of this everyday, throw-away material. I carefully consider the pieces I find, always embracing their ‘polystyrene-ness’. Some will become a canvas for painting, others a sculptural work; each sparking a new idea, association or interaction.
Photographic
I use photography to capture some of the items I find and to encourage their closer inspection and consideration. I often present my photographs in sets - which reveals the way I collect and connect similar objects I find, whether from charity shop or street. This isn’t to undermine the power of the singular image/object but recognises the potency of a series of like objects when presented together.
My recent ‘Broken Wings’ series is a capture of some 200+ found wing mirrors I’ve collected over a number of years in my city. Some look like jewels, others planetary. I love the shapes and patterns found in these and to imagine the narratives behind these objects.
Mixed Media
Found objects and ‘low art’ forms (found in charity or craft shops) are often used in my work. Each may lead my work down a different avenue; each a different adventure. A found kitchen tray gave me the idea to create a breakfast scene using plastic fuse beads. A washing machine drum sitting outside my back door inspired a phase of work merging utilitarian objects with aesthetic patterns.
Most of my Portfolio work is for sale (originals and/or prints) at various prices. Please contact me if you are interested.
